Real Estate Agents: Will Driving a Flashy Car Make You Richer or Will the Clunker Get Her Done?

There's an age-old debate. Should real estate agents drive what's economical or should they "drive for success"? That is, should they travel in style in, let's say, a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus or will a Hyundai do?

Well, as expected, real estate agents disagree. Most, however, believe the type of car may make a difference. Consider the following:

1. Car Should Match Clientele
This seems to be a key factor. So, if you're showing or listing million-dollar homes, you may want to rethink riding around in your 10-year old Jalopy, even if it gets excellent gas mileage, has low insurance premiums, and is paid for! Perception matters and clients expect you to look the part.

2. Clean, Presentable, and Comfortable
Regardless of whether you drive a luxury car or an economy car, it should be clean, presentable, and comfortable for the client. A Cadillac Escalade that's messy inside and hasn't been washed in weeks will not cut the mustard.

3. Customer Service Is Key
The main thing that will keep clients happy and garner referrals is excellent customer service. No matter how nice your car is, if you don't give clients what they need and want they will not want to work with you. Conversely, if you are friendly, knowledgeable, responsive, and well-prepared they probably won't focus on what you drive.

4. Meet Clients at the Property
Technology has changed the real estate game. Back in the day, clients depended upon real estate agents to pull listings and then went to the agent's office to see them. Today, clients find active listings on the internet, communicate via email, text, or phone, and then arrange to meet at the property. True. . .they still see your car, but it may not be as critical because they don't have to ride in the car. So, as long as the outside is clean, you're good to go. Additionally, by that time, you've already had a chance to make a first impression, even if it wasn't face-to-face.

So, will a flashy car make you richer? Maybe. . .maybe not. The main things are: provide excellent customer service, keep your car clean and presentable, and when possible, match car with clientele.

Until next time.

Be well.
